A research project based on a hypothetical physical separation of

the Atlantic provinces and Acadian regions from the rest of Canada

Bouctouche, New Brunswick, 24 February 2025 – Nation Prospère Acadie (Nation Prospère), a charitable organization dedicated to the promotion and prosperity of the French-speaking Acadian people of Atlantic Canada, will launch a new research project on a conceptual Atlantic republic in 2025.

As part of its mandate to ensure the continuity of French language, culture and life in Acadia, Nation Prospère published in August 2024 a research framework on a conceptual Atlantic republic, the aim of which was to develop a blueprint in the event of the physical separation of the Atlantic provinces and the Acadian regions from the rest of Canada.

This report then hypothesised that: “Today, resource-rich Alberta and the French nation of Quebec are once again questioning their future within the Canadian union. The question of how the more dependent Atlantic Canada region might reorganize itself economically and socially under such a scenario has never been fully explored.”

According to Daniel LeBlanc, Executive Director of Nation Prospère, the quest for answers to this question should be seen as part of a historical continuity process for the Acadian French speaking people. Acadia is the home of the Acadian people in Atlantic Canada, descendants of the first French and European settlers who came to the region from 1604 onwards.

LeBlanc believes that regardless of recent statements or predictive models about the unity or disunity of Canada, Acadians, First Nations and Atlantic Canadians need to reflect on and define their own common future. “Simply avoiding the issue won't make it go away,” he asserts, “as any change to the national status quo would have a profound impact on Atlantic Canada and Acadia.”

By contrast, the research framework suggests that “many of the world’s small states are not only surviving, they’re thriving. How are they structured, and what are the keys to their successes?”

The initiative is entitled the AC.CA Research Project, with the bilingual acronym standing for Atlantic Canada.Canada atlantique. Conceptual Atlantic Canadian banknotes have been created to promote the region’s cultural identity. These include a $5 ‘Evangéline’, a $20 ‘Anne of Green Gables’ and a $100 ‘Glooscap’ banknote. A Facebook and an X page have also been created where research project updates will be posted.
